Euro pallet dimensions & weight + ISPM 15 stamp meaning
A euro pallet (EUR 1, EPAL 1) measures 1200 × 800 × 144 mm and weighs approx. 25 kg; EPAL gives a safe working load of 1,500 kg, and in a stack on a solid, even surface the bottom pallet may carry at most 5,500 kg. EUR 2 is 1200 × 1000 × 162 mm (approx. 35 kg), EUR 3 1000 × 1200 × 144 mm (approx. 30 kg) and the EUR 6 half pallet 800 × 600 × 144 mm (approx. 9.5 kg). An ISPM 15 stamp reads: symbol, ISO country code, a producer or treatment-provider number issued in that country, and the treatment code (HT = heat treatment). In Logistivo you enter the same pallets as lines of a part-load request and measure warehouse pallets with your phone.

Pallet passport: size, weight, load rating and trailer spaces
Pallet passport: size, weight, load rating and trailer spaces — Pick a pallet to see its size, weight, EPAL load rating and spaces on a 13.6 m trailer; decode its ISPM 15 stamp further down.
Every pallet is drawn to the same scale. Load ratings appear only where EPAL publishes them; the sources give none for ISO sizes and CP pallets, so that field stays empty.

Two load figures — The safe working load applies to the goods on one pallet. The second figure is the maximum for the bottom pallet when laden pallets are stacked on a solid, even surface: EPAL 1 5,500 kg, EPAL 2 4,250 kg, EPAL 3 4,500 kg, EPAL 6 and EPAL 7 1,500 kg. — EPAL product pages
ISO 6780 sizes — ISO 6780:2003 (flat pallets for intercontinental materials handling — principal dimensions and tolerances) lists six sizes: 1200 × 800, 1200 × 1000, 1219 × 1016 (48 × 40 in), 1165 × 1165, 1067 × 1067 and 1100 × 1100 mm. The standard is paywalled; the table comes from a public summary. It covers dimensions, so we give no weight or load rating for these sizes. — ISO 6780:2003; Wikipedia (size table)
CP chemical pallets (EPAL) — CP1 1000 × 1200, CP2 800 × 1200, CP3 1140 × 1140, CP4 1100 × 1300 and CP5 760 × 1140 mm are 138 mm high; CP6 1200 × 1000, CP7 1300 × 1100, CP8 and CP9 1140 × 1140 mm are 156 mm high. CP8 has 12 blocks, the others 9. — EPAL, CP1–CP9 pages
Spaces on a 13.6 m trailer — One layer on a 13,620 × 2,480 mm floor (curtainsider inside dimensions per Samskip), using the same method as our container pallet calculator: the best block layout of one pallet size, lengthwise and crosswise, pallets butted and with 10 mm gaps. Euro pallet: 34 butted, 33 with gaps. — Samskip (trailer dimensions); method of the Logistivo container calculator
Loading metre (LDM) — LDM = pallet length × width ÷ 2.4 m (in metres). Euro pallet: 1.2 × 0.8 ÷ 2.4 = 0.4 LDM; 1.2 × 1.0 ÷ 2.4 = 0.5 LDM. A trade convention, not a legal unit. — TIMOCOM transport lexicon
EPAL pool exchange — An EPAL pallet is exchangeable unless damage makes it unusable; with no legible EPAL marking on both corner blocks of one long side it is not exchangeable. Quality classes A, B and C are a non-binding EPAL recommendation that applies only if the parties agree. — EPAL quality classification and terms of exchange (08/2023)

The passport describes the pallet type as published. The condition of a particular pallet (damage, moisture, repairs) is a matter of inspection, and the permitted load in racking is set by the racking manufacturer’s data.
What does the ISPM 15 stamp on a pallet mean? — Type what you see in the right-hand box of the stamp on the block. We break it down under ISPM 15 and show who can confirm the number.
IPPC symbol — The wheat ear on the left, separated from the codes by a vertical line; its design must closely resemble the ISPM 15 example. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Country code — Two-letter ISO country code, separated by a hyphen from the producer code — the country whose authority issued the number, not the shipper’s country. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Producer or treatment provider code — A unique code for the packaging producer or treatment provider, assigned by the national plant protection organisation (NPPO); the number and order of digits and letters are set by that country. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Treatment code — HT, DH, MB or SF — on a separate line or after a hyphen on the same line as the codes. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Treatment codes HT, DH, MB, SF and the former DB
HT · Heat treatment — At least 56 °C for 30 continuous minutes throughout the wood, core included (conventional or kiln chamber). All newly produced EPAL pallets have been heat treated since 1 January 2010. — ISPM 15, Annex 1; EPAL
DH · Dielectric heating — Microwaves or radio waves: at least 60 °C for 1 continuous minute throughout the wood, surface included. — ISPM 15, Annex 1
MB · Methyl bromide fumigation — Approved in ISPM 15 (wood up to 20 cm cross-section, at least 10 °C, at least 24 h). In the EU, methyl bromide could be used only until 18 March 2010; Germany’s JKI explains that the ban covers fumigation inside the EU and that packaging fumigated in non-EU countries may still be imported. EPAL pallets must not be treated with MB. — ISPM 15, Annex 1; Regulation (EC) No 1005/2009, Art. 12; JKI FAQ; EPAL
SF · Sulphuryl fluoride fumigation — The second fumigant in ISPM 15; bark must be removed before treatment. The Dutch NVWA notes that SF cannot be used in the Netherlands. — ISPM 15, Annex 1; NVWA
DB · Debarked (former addition) — Older stamps carry DB (debarked). Debarking is now required for all packaging, so DB is no longer needed, and countries should accept marks made under earlier versions of the standard. — ISPM 15, footnote 6 to Annex 2; JKI; French agriculture ministry
Who issues the number in each country — ISPM 15 leaves the number format to each country. Below are the schemes from official sources for nine markets; the country from your stamp is highlighted.
Poland (PL-VV-NNN — After PL come the voivodeship code (TERYT) and the plant number. Countries not listed here: the number is issued by that country’s national plant protection organisation (NPPO), which sets its format (ISPM 15, Annex 2). We read the country name from the ISO code.
Where are the markings on an EPAL pallet? — Long side of an EPAL 1 pallet: three blocks, each with different information.
Corner block — EPAL in an oval; a new pallet carries it on all four corner blocks.
Middle block — IPPC mark — country code, number issued by the plant protection service, and HT.
Middle block — EPAL number — producer’s licence number, year and month of production.
Control staple and repair nail — mandatory EPAL control staple on one middle block; a repaired pallet also has the EPAL repair marking nail with the repairer’s licence number.
Other corner block — EPAL in an oval; on the EPAL Euro pallet QR, an individual 50 × 50 mm QR code and a 9-character serial number.

What a correct stamp looks like, and repaired pallets
Border and order — Rectangular or square, inside a border, with a vertical line separating the symbol from the codes. Nothing else inside the border; producer logos go next to it, outside. Small gaps are allowed for stencilling. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Legibility and position — Legible without a visual aid, durable and not transferable, not hand drawn, preferably on at least two opposite sides. Red and orange should be avoided because they are used for dangerous goods labels. — ISPM 15, Annex 2
Repair up to about 1/3 of components — Only treated wood or processed wood material may be used, and each added component is marked individually. The country may instead require old marks to be obliterated, the unit re-treated and re-marked. — ISPM 15, section 4.3.2
Remanufacture: more than 1/3 of components — Previous marks must be permanently obliterated (painted over or ground off), the unit re-treated and the mark applied anew. — ISPM 15, section 4.3.3
Reuse — A treated, marked unit that has not been repaired or remanufactured needs no re-treatment or new mark for its whole service life. — ISPM 15, section 4.3.1
What ISPM 15 does not cover — Packaging of wood 6 mm thick or less; packaging made wholly of plywood, particle board, OSB or veneer; sawdust, shavings and wood wool; wood permanently attached to vehicles and containers. — ISPM 15, section 2.1; GOV.UK
DB (debarked) comes from earlier versions of the standard; debarking is now mandatory and such marks should be accepted.
KD (kiln dried) is not an ISPM 15 code. Kiln drying counts as heat treatment only if it reaches 56 °C for 30 minutes — and then the mark says HT.
MB — methyl bromide fumigation: approved in ISPM 15; in the EU it could be used only until 18 Mar 2010, so the treatment was done outside the EU or before then. Such packaging may still be imported (JKI).
The ISO code for the United Kingdom is GB, not UK; we read it as GB.
EPAL/EUR is EPAL’s brand mark on the corner blocks, not part of the IPPC stamp.
This part does not match the {format} scheme ({country}); check that the digits and letters were copied correctly.
The producer or treatment provider number is missing — it is required in the ISPM 15 mark.
A stamp starts with a two-letter country code (e.g. NL); we could not find one at the start of the text.
No treatment code: the ISPM 15 mark must include HT, DH, MB or SF.
More than one treatment code entered; the mark shows the code of the treatment applied.
Code “{code}” is not in the region list for {country}; check the characters.
“{cc}” is not an ISO 3166 country code — check the first two letters.
Keep a photo of the stamp on the pallet record in Logistivo — In Logistivo’s warehouse module every pallet has its own record: code, warehouse and zone, measurements with history, and photos as proof. A photo of the block with the ISPM 15 stamp stays with the pallet when a customer or an inspector asks about treatment. Logistivo warehouse module
The decoder reads the structure of the stamp. It does not confirm that the number is registered or that the pallet was actually treated — only the authority named for that country can confirm that.
1200 × 800 × 144 mm — 120 × 80 cm and 14.4 cm high. The EPAL 1 euro pallet has 11 boards, 78 nails and 9 blocks and weighs approx. 25 kg.
EPAL writes the size as 800 × 1200 mm; it is the same pallet. Boards are 22–24 mm thick (stringers up to 25 mm), and the nails carry a two-letter head marking approved by EPAL.
A 13.6 m trailer takes 34 euro pallets butted together or 33 with 10 mm gaps; each pallet uses 0.4 loading metres. For 20ft and 40ft containers, use the container pallet calculator.
EUR 2, EUR 3, EUR 6: how do the other EPAL pallets compare?
They differ in footprint, height, weight and load rating. EUR 2 and EUR 3 share the 1200 × 1000 mm footprint but are two different pallets.
EUR 1 (EPAL 1) — Size: 1200 × 800 × 144 mm | Weight: approx. 25 kg | Safe working load: 1,500 kg | Bottom of stack: 5,500 kg
EUR 2 (EPAL 2) — Size: 1200 × 1000 × 162 mm | Weight: approx. 35 kg | Safe working load: 1,250 kg | Bottom of stack: 4,250 kg
EUR 3 (EPAL 3) — Size: 1000 × 1200 × 144 mm | Weight: approx. 30 kg | Safe working load: 1,500 kg | Bottom of stack: 4,500 kg
EUR 6 (EPAL 6) — Size: 800 × 600 × 144 mm | Weight: approx. 9.5 kg | Safe working load: 750 kg | Bottom of stack: 1,500 kg
EPAL 7 — Size: 800 × 600 × 163 mm | Weight: approx. 9.5 kg | Safe working load: 500 kg | Bottom of stack: 1,500 kg
Source: EPAL. EUR 2 has 17 boards and is 162 mm high, EUR 3 has 13 boards and is 144 mm high; EPAL 7 has steel angle brackets and a plastic block.
How much does a euro pallet weigh, and what is its weight limit?
Approx. 25 kg. The safe working load is 1,500 kg; in a stack on a solid, even surface the bottom pallet may carry at most 5,500 kg.
These are two different figures: 1,500 kg is the goods on one pallet, 5,500 kg is the whole stack of laden pallets resting on the bottom one. For EUR 2 the figures are 1,250 and 4,250 kg, for EUR 3 1,500 and 4,500 kg, for EUR 6 750 and 1,500 kg.
EPAL gives no separate racking figure for EPAL 1; only for the EPAL 7 half pallet does it state 500 kg in racking and when moved by forklift. How many pallets a lorry can carry by weight also depends on axle loads — check them with the axle weight calculator.
Pallet weight in a Logistivo request — In a part-load request you enter the weight of one pallet and the quantity; Logistivo multiplies and adds up the lines into the request weight, so the carrier sees the same weight you work out here.
Euro pallet vs standard pallet: what is the difference?
There is no single “standard pallet”: ISO 6780 lists six sizes. The euro pallet is 1200 × 800 mm; the North American GMA pallet is 48 × 40 in (1219 × 1016 mm); 1200 × 1000 mm is another ISO size and the footprint of EUR 2 and EUR 3.
The other ISO 6780 sizes are 1165 × 1165 mm (Australia), 1067 × 1067 mm and 1100 × 1100 mm (Asia). EPAL also certifies the CP1–CP9 chemical pallets, such as the square CP3 at 1140 × 1140 mm.
Footprint decides trailer spaces: 26 pallets of 1200 × 1000 or 48 × 40 in fit on a 13.6 m trailer, 22 square pallets of 1140 × 1140 mm. For cartons and cubic metres use the CBM calculator.
Any pallet size in a Logistivo request — In the part-load request form you choose EUR (120 × 80 cm) or an “other” pallet and enter its length, width, height and weight, so the carrier prices the actual load rather than “a few pallets”. Logistivo for shippers
No. The size is the same, but EPAL is the association that licenses production and repair and runs the open exchange pool.
An EPAL pallet carries the EPAL oval on the corner blocks and, on the middle blocks, the IPPC mark, the licence number with year and month, and the control staple. A pallet of the same size without these marks is not an EPAL pallet.
In exchange, legibility counts: according to EPAL, a pallet with no EPAL marking on both corner blocks of one long side is not exchangeable. Classes A, B and C are a non-binding EPAL recommendation that applies only if the parties agree.
What does the ISPM 15 stamp on a pallet mean?
It shows that the wood packaging was treated under ISPM 15: the IPPC symbol, the country code, a producer or treatment-provider number issued in that country, and the treatment code — HT means 56 °C for 30 minutes throughout the wood.
The number format is national: DE-NW-49123 is a German plant in North Rhine-Westphalia (German numbers start with 49), PL-14-123 a Polish plant in the Masovian voivodeship, NL-123 a Dutch plant. UK stamps use GB, not UK.
Type your stamp into the decoder on this page to see each part and the authority that can confirm the number.
Do pallets moving between Great Britain and the EU need an ISPM 15 stamp?
Yes, in both directions. Great Britain has required ISPM 15 for wood packaging from all countries, EU included, since 1 January 2021, and the EU requires it for wood packaging from non-EU countries.
A legible ISPM 15 mark replaces phytosanitary or treatment certificates; GOV.UK states that certification cannot be used instead of the mark. Non-compliant packaging can be rejected or destroyed at the border. Within the EU single market ISPM 15 is not mandatory (Dutch NVWA).
Northern Ireland follows different rules for movements with the EU. Exempt from ISPM 15: plywood, particle board and OSB packaging, wood 6 mm thick or less, sawdust and shavings.
HT, DH, MB, SF, DB: what do the codes on a pallet mean?
HT is heat treatment, DH dielectric heating, MB methyl bromide, SF sulphuryl fluoride; DB (debarked) is an addition found on older stamps.
In the EU, methyl bromide could be used only until 18 March 2010, and EPAL pallets must never be treated with it; Germany’s JKI confirms that MB-fumigated packaging from non-EU countries may still be imported.
“KD” (kiln dried) on its own is not an ISPM 15 code: kiln drying counts as heat treatment only if it reaches 56 °C for 30 minutes, and then the mark shows HT.
When does a repaired pallet need a new stamp?
When more than about a third of its components have been replaced: all old marks are then obliterated, the pallet is re-treated and marked again.
For smaller repairs only treated wood (or processed wood material) may be used, and each new component carries its own mark. EPAL pallets may be repaired only by licensed repairers; you can spot a repaired one by the EPAL repair nail on a middle block.
Common pallet mistakes
EUR 2 instead of EUR 3 — Same 1200 × 1000 mm footprint, different height (162 vs 144 mm) and weight (approx. 35 vs 30 kg). Name the type when ordering or exchanging.
Safe working load confused with stack load — 1,500 kg is the load on one euro pallet; 5,500 kg applies to the bottom pallet of a stack on a solid, even surface.
IPPC stamp mistaken for the EPAL mark — The IPPC stamp proves phytosanitary treatment; membership of the EPAL pool is shown by the EPAL oval on the corner blocks.
New board without a mark — After a repair every new component needs its own ISPM 15 mark, otherwise the pallet does not meet the standard for export.
UK instead of GB — The first two letters of a stamp are always the ISO country code, and for the United Kingdom that is GB.

How much does a euro pallet weigh?
Approx. 25 kg according to EPAL; EUR 2 approx. 35 kg, EUR 3 approx. 30 kg, EUR 6 approx. 9.5 kg.
What is the weight limit of a euro pallet?
EPAL gives a safe working load of 1,500 kg; the bottom pallet of a stack on a solid, even surface may carry at most 5,500 kg.
How many euro pallets fit on a 13.6 m trailer?
In one layer, 33 with 10 mm gaps between pallets or 34 butted together (inside 13.62 × 2.48 m).
Does an ISPM 15 stamp expire?
No. Treated and marked wood packaging can be reused for its whole service life until it is repaired or remanufactured (ISPM 15, section 4.3.1; JKI).
Who issues ISPM 15 numbers in the UK?
Marking is done by members of the UK Wood Packaging Material Marking Programme who are registered with the Forestry Commission; the country code on the stamp is GB.
Can I add pallets to a transport request in Logistivo?
Yes. In a part-load (LTL) request you add pallet lines — EUR 120 × 80 cm or any other size, height, weight per pallet and quantity; Logistivo adds up the weight and carriers see the lines when they quote.
Can Logistivo measure a pallet with a phone?
Yes, in the warehouse module: the Logistivo app measures with an iPhone’s LiDAR or with ARCore on Android, can estimate the size from a photo, and keeps every measurement in the pallet’s history.
