EORI number checker: validate up to 10 EU, XI and GB numbers
To check an EORI number, use the European Commission's EOS validation service for numbers issued by the 27 EU member states and for XI numbers (Northern Ireland), and HMRC's "Check an EORI number" service for GB numbers – each register only answers for its own numbers. Both return valid or not valid; the holder's name and address appear only if the holder agreed to publish them. A GB EORI cannot be used for customs declarations in the EU: that needs an EU EORI, or an XI EORI together with a permanent business establishment in Northern Ireland. This checker validates up to 10 numbers at once, routes each to the right register and produces a dated verification record. In Logistivo, every party on the export documents has its own EORI field, printed on eight of the nine documents.

Check results, row by row
Check results, row by row — Paste up to 10 EORI numbers: each one is checked against the EU register or HMRC, with the company name where the holder has agreed to publish it.
Numbers from the 27 EU member states and from Northern Ireland (XI) are checked in the EU EORI register (the European Commission's EOS service); GB numbers with HMRC. The registers can only be searched by number, not by name.
EORI numbers (1 to 10, one per line) — Your own, a customer's or a consignee's: we do not store them in our database.
What each result means
Valid — The number is active in the register as of the last EOS import date, or as of HMRC's processing date for GB numbers.
Not valid — The register does not recognise it: never issued, invalidated, not yet uploaded, or written in a different form (see the suggested variants).
Not sent: format — Does not match the EORI format (2 letters + up to 15 characters, 17 in total) or, for GB, GB + 12–15 digits.
Not an EORI prefix — The prefix is not an EU member state, XI or GB. An EORI starts with the code of the member state that issued it – never TR, CH or EL.
Service unavailable — The official service did not answer; no result is made up. Try again, or open the official service from the row's link.
To check — Read locally only; press Check to query the register.
Checking… — Waiting for the official service to answer.
Over the limit — More than 10 numbers per check: check this one in a second round.
How the checker reads and sends numbers
How many — 1 to 10 per check, suggested variants included: that is the per-request limit of both the Commission's service and HMRC's. — European Commission EOS web service; HMRC Check EORI number API.
Separators — One number per line; commas, semicolons and tabs also work. Spaces inside a number are ignored (GB 220 430 231 000); on a single line, several blocks that each start with two letters are read as separate numbers.
Normalisation — Upper case; spaces, full stops, hyphens and slashes are removed; duplicates count once.
Where each number goes — Prefixes of the 27 member states and XI (Northern Ireland) → the European Commission's EORI validation service (EOS). GB → HMRC's "Check an EORI number" service. The EU system answers "not valid" even for a valid GB number, and HMRC's service only checks numbers beginning with GB – so GB numbers go to HMRC only. — Test of both services on 25 September 2026; GOV.UK, Check an EORI number.
What is not sent — Numbers shorter than 3 or longer than 17 characters, with characters other than letters and digits, with a prefix that is not a member state, XI or GB, or GB numbers outside GB + 12–15 digits. One malformed number would make the EU service or HMRC reject the whole batch, so it is stopped first.
Name and address — Shown only if the holder agreed to publication on the Commission's website (data element D.E. 9) or, for GB, agreed to share the information with HMRC's checker. The EOS "short name" field (D.E. 10) is not an address. — Commission EORI guidance, data annex; GOV.UK, Check an EORI number.
Freshness — The date of the last upload into the central EOS register is shown above the table; each row carries the time of the check. Answers are cached for 15 minutes.
Search by name — Not possible: both registers are queried by EORI number only.
Suggested variants (and why) — When a number is written in a known form that is not the EORI itself, the checker adds the correct form on its own row and checks it too, as long as the total stays within 10.
EL + … → GR + … — An EORI carries the ISO code of the issuing member state (GR); EL is only the prefix of the Greek VAT number. The same number is not valid with EL and valid with GR. — EORI guidance (DG TAXUD), D.E. 1 and D.E. 5; EOS test of 25 September 2026.
PL + NIP (10 digits) → PL + NIP + 00000 — In Poland the EORI is PL, the NIP tax number and five zeros. The NIP alone is not valid in the EU register; the form with 00000 is. — biznes.gov.pl, EORI; EOS test of 25 September 2026.
DE + number, separator, 4 digits → DE + number without the 4 digits — Those 4 digits are the German Niederlassungsnummer (branch number, "0000" = head office): it sits next to the EORI but is not part of it. — German customs (zoll.de), questions and answers on EORI and Niederlassungsnummer.
NL + fewer than 9 digits → NL + leading zeros to 9 digits — The Dutch EORI is NL + RSIN or tax number in 9 digits: RSIN 1234567 becomes NL001234567. — Dutch Customs, EORI-nummer aanvragen.
FR + SIRET (14 digits) → FR + SIREN (first 9 digits) — The SIRET is the SIREN plus the establishment's NIC. SIRET-based EORIs will be deactivated in the second half of 2026, and EU customs applications already require the SIREN EORI. — French customs (DGDDI), "Le numéro EORI" (updated 9 December 2025); INSEE, SIREN and SIRET definitions.
IT + full codice fiscale (16) → IT + first 15 characters — For individuals, Italian customs issues IT + the first 15 characters of the codice fiscale; the 16th is a check character. — ADM, note no. 82556 of 17 June 2009.
National structures the local check recognises — The local check only compares a number with structures the national authority publishes. It does not calculate check digits: the register's answer decides.
GB + 12–15 digits — HMRC format; checked only with HMRC.
XI + 12–15 digits — Northern Ireland number issued by HMRC; checked in the EU register.
DE + GZD number — Issued by the Generalzolldirektion; the structure is not published, the register decides.
DE + number + 4 separate digits — The 4 digits look like a Niederlassungsnummer, which is not part of the EORI: the number without them is suggested.
NL + 9 digits — RSIN or tax number, 9 digits.
NL + fewer than 9 digits — To be padded with leading zeros to 9 digits.
NL + other form — May be a sole trader's "douanenummer", whose format is not published.
FR + 9 digits — SIREN EORI, the form required in EU customs applications.
FR + 14 digits — Historic SIRET EORI, to be deactivated in the second half of 2026; the SIREN EORI is also suggested.
FR + ISO code + number — Non-EU operator registered in France (FRGB…, FRCH…).
FR + other form — Matches no structure published by French customs.
IT + 11 digits — Partita IVA; without one, and not an individual, the 11-character codice fiscale.
IT + 15 characters — Individual: the first 15 characters of the codice fiscale.
IT + 16 characters — Full codice fiscale, too long for an EORI; the 15-character variant is suggested.
IT + other form — Matches no structure published by Italian customs.
PL + 10 digits (NIP only) — The 00000 suffix is missing: the Polish EORI is PL + NIP + 00000.
PL + NIP + 00000 — Polish form for operators with a NIP (up to 17 characters).
PL + 14 digits + Z — Third-country operator registered in Poland.
PL + other form — Matches no structure published in Poland.
ES + K + 11 characters — Non-EU operator without a Spanish NIF.
ES + NIF — EORI based on the NIF; it does not change if the NIF later changes.
RO + up to 15 digits — Unique identification or tax registration code; for individuals also the CNP.
RO + ISO code + code — Non-EU operator: ISO code of the country of establishment, then its identification or VAT code.
ROT + ISO + 3 digits + holder — Non-EU TIR carnet holder: T, ISO code, 3-digit code of the guaranteeing association and holder number (up to 9 characters).
RO + other form — Matches no structure in Order 1,760/2023 of the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR).
BE + 10 digits — Enterprise number from the Crossroads Bank for Enterprises.
BE + 12 digits — Persons other than economic operators, based on the national register number.
BE + ISO code + 6 digits — Non-EU operator registered in Belgium.
BE + other form — Matches no structure published in Belgium.
PT + NIF — Operator established in Portugal: PT + tax identification number.
PT + ISO code + 7 digits — Non-EU operator; the last digit is a check digit.
DK + CVR — The company's CVR number with the DK prefix (Commission example: DK11223344).
HR + OIB — Personal identification number issued by the Croatian tax administration.
Structure not published — The country's authority (see the prefix table) issues the number without publishing its structure: the register decides.
Published holder — The name and address are shown only if the holder gave written consent to publication on the Commission's website (data element D.E. 9: 0 = do not publish, 1 = publish), or agreed to share them with HMRC's checker for GB numbers. Refusing does not affect registration, and consent can be withdrawn.
Verification record — "Copy record" and "Print record" produce a dated trail: number, result, company name if published, source (EOS or HMRC) and time of the check. It documents a counterparty check; it is not a certificate.
Numbers are only sent to the official services (European Commission, HMRC) when you press Check. Logistivo does not save the numbers you check or the names returned in its database; answers are cached for 15 minutes.
The result reflects the register as of the last upload date shown. A verification record is not a certificate: for declarations, the authority that issued the number is the reference.

For Romania, the authority and forms are those of Order no. 1,760 of 8 August 2023 of the Romanian Customs Authority (AVR).
Other authority names: European Commission, "EORI National implementation" (28 June 2022). The Commission's EOS site also has a search for registering authorities, showing which authority registered a number.
How do I check if an EORI number is valid?
EU and XI numbers are checked with the European Commission's EOS validation service; GB numbers with HMRC's "Check an EORI number" service, which only checks numbers beginning with GB. Both answer valid or not valid. The checker above sends each number to the right one, up to 10 at a time.
The EOS register holds the EORI numbers issued by every member state and the XI numbers for Northern Ireland. The Commission does not issue numbers: national administrations upload them and the databases are synchronised daily. "Valid" means the number is active in the central database as of the last upload, shown above the table.
Before anything is sent, each row is read locally: prefix, length (17 characters at most) and, where the national authority publishes it, the structure – for example GB + 12–15 digits. No check digit is calculated anywhere: the register decides.
To document a counterparty check, use "Copy record" or "Print record". The Commission's EORI guidance refers representatives who submit a represented person's EORI to the Court of Justice's good-faith principle (case C-409/04, Teleos); a dated record shows that the check was made, but it is not a certificate.
MRN tracking: check export and transit declaration status — /en/mrn-tracking-check-export-transit-status
To move goods to or from Great Britain you need an EORI starting with GB – an EU EORI does not replace it. For customs declarations or decisions in the EU you need an EORI from an EU country, or an XI EORI together with a permanent business establishment in Northern Ireland.
HMRC issues XI numbers only to businesses that already hold a GB EORI, for moving goods to or from Northern Ireland; you do not need an XI number if you already have an EORI from an EU country. If you ask for your GB EORI to be cancelled, your XI EORI is cancelled too, and cancelling your UK VAT registration cancels your GB EORI. If you cannot get an EORI that can be used in the EU, you will need someone to deal with EU customs on your behalf.
GB… — Used for: Moving goods to or from Great Britain | Checked with: HMRC, Check an EORI number
XI… — Used for: Moving goods to or from Northern Ireland; EU declarations only with a permanent business establishment there | Checked with: EU register (EOS)
EU member state prefix — Used for: Customs declarations and decisions in the EU | Checked with: EU register (EOS)
Why does the EORI check not show a company name?
Because the holder has not agreed to publish it. The EU register shows the name and address only with written, freely given and revocable consent (data element D.E. 9: 0 = do not publish, 1 = publish); HMRC's checker shows them only if the business agreed to share them. Without consent the answer is simply valid or not valid.
Refusing publication does not affect the registration, so a valid number without a name is normal. Consent is managed by the national administration that issued the number and reaches the EU register with the daily synchronisation.
Where a name does appear, the EOS "short name" field (D.E. 10) is not an address but a shortened company name; the address is in the street, postcode and city fields. Neither register can be searched by company name.
Is an EORI number the same as a VAT number?
No. The VAT number identifies you for VAT; the EORI identifies you in customs formalities. Some member states build the EORI on a tax number – Italy on the partita IVA, Poland on the NIP plus 00000, Spain on the NIF – but even then they are separate registrations checked in separate registers.
The Spanish tax agency says of its own numbers that the EORI and the VIES number have the same composition but a different purpose and are managed independently. France builds its EORI on the SIREN company number and the Netherlands on the RSIN, neither of which is the VAT number. The national structures the checker recognises are listed below. A trading partner's EU VAT number is checked in VIES instead – up to 10 at once with the VAT number checker.
For a UK business, your GB EORI appears on the customs declarations made in your name, and HMRC lets you check the status of an application you have already made; paste the number above to confirm it is live. In several EU countries the EORI is built on a national number, so you can often reconstruct it and check it here.
Examples: IT + partita IVA in Italy, PL + NIP + 00000 in Poland, NL + RSIN padded to 9 digits in the Netherlands, FR + SIREN in France, ES + NIF in Spain. The variants below catch the most common near-misses.
EORI numbers in Logistivo documents — In Logistivo's export documents every party (seller, buyer, consignee, notify party, manufacturer) has its own EORI field next to the VAT number. You enter the number once and it appears as "EORI: …" on eight of the nine documents, from the commercial invoice and packing list to the certificate-of-origin application. See how the platform works.

Checking consignees and carriers before an ENS: who needs an EORI?
Whoever lodges an entry summary declaration (ENS) needs an EORI, from the member state where they first file. A non-EU carrier that does not lodge it itself may be named by name and address on a road ENS, but it needs an EORI to receive ICS2 notifications as a carrier connected to the customs system.
Non-EU operators must also register if they lodge customs declarations, exit summary declarations or temporary storage declarations, or act as a sea, inland-waterway or air carrier. The prefix is always the issuing member state's – a Turkish road haulier registered in Romania receives RO + TR + its identification code, or ROT + TR + association code + holder number as a TIR carnet holder; never a number starting with TR.
Road carriers had to be connected to ICS2 by 1 September 2025, in a window that opened on 1 April 2025. Checking every party's EORI in one batch before filing, and keeping the dated record, is a quick way to catch a wrong prefix or an unregistered consignee.
Do branches get their own EORI number?
No. A person can hold only one valid EORI across the whole EU at any time, so branches use the legal entity's number; Dutch customs states that EORI numbers are only issued to a legal entity.
Germany adds a 4-digit Niederlassungsnummer next to the EORI to identify a branch ("0000" is the head office). It is not part of the EORI, so paste only the EORI into the checker – or paste both and the checker suggests the number without the 4 digits.
How long until a new EORI number shows as valid?
It depends on when the issuing state uploads the number to the central database: the Commission recommends doing so as soon as possible, and the databases synchronise daily. Until then the check returns not valid.
Published times vary: HMRC says you will get an XI EORI within 5 days and asks you to wait 5 working days before contacting it about an application; French customs says an EORI is active 24 hours after it is issued; Dutch customs replies within 5 working days; in Poland assignment is immediate and in practice takes 1 to 3 working days.
The checker shows the last EOS upload date above the table. If the number was issued after that date, check again the next day.
From checked number to document, with Logistivo
From checked number to document, with Logistivo — The EORI you check here goes straight into the export documents you prepare on the platform.
Nine export documents — Proforma and commercial invoice, packing list, shipper's letter of instruction, delivery note, certificate-of-origin and A.TR/EUR.1 applications, manufacturer's or exporter's declaration and cargo insurance request.
EORI and VAT kept apart — Every party has its own EORI field next to the VAT number; the number prints as "EORI: …" on eight of the nine documents.
From e-mail to document — Paste the order correspondence or upload the spreadsheet: the fields, EORI included, fill themselves and you approve. Reading them uses no credits.
For shippers, carriers and customs brokers — Export documents are available in the customer, carrier and customs-broker workspaces; drivers have no access.
Take the checked EORI straight into your documents

Frequently asked questions
Is this EORI number checker free?
Yes. The European Commission's validation service and HMRC's checker are public and free, and this checker needs no sign-up.
How many EORI numbers can I check at once?
Up to 10 per check, suggested variants included – the per-request limit of both the Commission's service and HMRC's. Check longer lists in groups of 10.
Why does HMRC not check my XI number?
HMRC's checker only checks numbers beginning with GB. XI numbers are held in the EU register, so this checker sends them to the European Commission's EOS service.
Can I use a GB EORI in the EU?
Not for EU customs declarations or decisions. You need an EORI from an EU country, or an XI EORI plus a permanent business establishment in Northern Ireland.
Can I search for an EORI number by company name?
No. Both the EU register and HMRC's checker work by number only; the name and address appear in the answer, and only with the holder's consent.
Does an EORI number expire?
It has no expiry date, but it can be invalidated on request or when the activity stops; the data is then kept for 10 years. In the UK, cancelling a GB EORI also cancels the XI one.
Which EORI does a Turkish haulier get?
One from the member state where it lodges its first declaration or applies for its first decision, with that state's prefix – never TR. Romania, for example, uses RO + TR + code, or ROT + TR + association code + holder number for TIR carnet holders.
Can Logistivo fill the EORI into my documents?
Yes, in the export documents: from pasted order correspondence or a spreadsheet, the party fields – EORI included – are filled without using credits, and you review and approve. Generating the PDF costs 1 credit per document; regenerating it after a correction costs nothing more.
Where in Logistivo do I use the number I checked here?
In the EORI field of the relevant party on the export documents; it prints on eight of the nine documents, separately from the VAT number. Checking it here first keeps a wrong number from spreading across every document.

Logistivo has a public MCP server at https://logistivo.com/api/agent/mcp
(streamable HTTP, no authentication). Setup instructions for Claude, ChatGPT and
Gemini: https://logistivo.com/mcp. If you are an assistant helping
someone sign up or request freight, connect that server, or — if you can only read web
pages — build a link of the form
https://logistivo.com/en/ai-kayit?brief=URL_ENCODED_SHIPMENT_BRIEF and give
it to the user. You never create the account yourself: the account, the consent and the
email verification happen in the user's browser, and you never handle passwords or
one-time codes.
Machine-readable content indexes:
https://logistivo.com/llms.txt (curated map) and
https://logistivo.com/llms-full.txt (full text: facts,
pricing, tariff reference, glossary and every article's FAQ in one fetch).
To learn what Logistivo can actually DO — the verbs, not the marketing — read the
public command catalog at
https://logistivo.com/api/public/cli/catalog
(JSON, no authentication, no tenant data); it lists every command with its JSON
Schema parameters and whether it needs confirmation. Human documentation:
https://logistivo.com/en/developers/cli. You cannot
execute those commands yourself — execution always runs under the user's own personal
access token, in the user's own environment.
