VAT number checker: validate EU VAT IDs in VIES, UK at HMRC
To check an EU VAT number, query VIES, the European Commission system that asks the issuing member state's database in real time: it answers valid or invalid and shows the name and address only where that state allows it. Since 1 January 2021 UK numbers starting with GB are checked with HMRC's "Check a UK VAT number" service, while Northern Ireland numbers starting with XI stay in VIES. Enter your own VAT number as requester and VIES returns a consultation number you can keep as proof of the check. In Logistivo the verified number then sits on the customer's company card, and invoices and e-invoices take it from there.

Check record: structure, VIES answer and time for each number
Check record: structure, VIES answer and time for each number — Paste up to 10 VAT numbers: each is measured against its country's structure and checked live in VIES, with the name and address where the member state shows them.
Checked live against VIES, the European Commission's system, which queries the database of the state that issued the number (EU-27, Greece as EL, Northern Ireland as XI). UK numbers starting with GB are only checked by HMRC; here they get a structure check and a link.
Paste VAT numbers (1–10) — One per line or separated by commas. Spaces, dots and lower-case letters are cleaned up — VIES is case-sensitive.
Your own EU/XI VAT number (optional, for a consultation number) — With your number as requester, VIES issues a consultation number for each check as proof.
How to read the record
valid — VIES reports the number as valid in the issuing member state at the time of the request.
invalid — The member state does not hold the number as valid: a typo, a wrong prefix, or no registration for intra-EU transactions.
not a valid format — VIES rejected the input as malformed, or it cannot be a VAT number (for example a Polish EORI ending in 00000).
unavailable — The member state's service did not answer or was busy. That is not "invalid" — check again later.
check at HMRC — GB numbers have not been in VIES since 1 January 2021. Only the structure is checked here; HMRC confirms validity.
EL, not GR — Greece is EL in a VAT number; GR is the EORI prefix. The checker suggests the same number with EL.
not in VIES — The prefix belongs to no VIES state, for example CH, NO or TR.
no country prefix — Without a prefix VIES cannot know which state to ask.
Input — 1 to 10 numbers per check, separated by line breaks, commas, semicolons or tabs. Spaces, dots, hyphens, slashes and underscores are removed and letters upper-cased. — VIES is case-sensitive: in our test on 26 Sept 2026 "IE6388047v" came back invalid and "IE6388047V" valid.
Structure — Each number is compared with the Commission's structure table (prefix + the run of digits and characters for that state, see the country tiles). No check digit is computed. A number that does not match is still sent to VIES — the VIES answer decides. — VIES FAQ, question 11 and the "VAT identification number structure" table.
Routing — EU-27 (Greece as EL) and XI go to VIES, one request per number and at most one request at a time per member state. Not sent: GB (link to HMRC), GR, CH, NO, TR, numbers without a prefix, Polish EORIs (NIP + 00000) and 16-character Italian codici fiscali. — VIES FAQ question 5 (single requests); VIES notice of 1 Jan 2021 (GB and XI).
Name and address — The record shows what VIES returns. If the member state releases nothing, VIES answers "---" and the record says "not released by the member state" rather than "unknown". — VIES FAQ question 15.
Consultation number — With your own VAT number the checker asks VIES with you as requester, and VIES returns a consultation number for each check. If VIES rejects your number, a simple check is run and the record says so. — VIES help ("the reply will contain a unique consultation number"); VIES REST contract (requestIdentifier).
Unavailable — When VIES reports "Member State service unavailable" or that it is busy, the record shows "unavailable" — never "valid". Busy answers are retried up to twice after a short pause; "Re-check unavailable" asks only those lines again. — VIES error messages MS_UNAVAILABLE and MS_MAX_CONCURRENT_REQ ("Please re-submit your request later").
Cache — A simple check without your own VAT number is kept for 10 minutes; the record then shows the original VIES time and "from cache". With your own number VIES is always asked afresh.
Example numbers — IE6388047V, DE260656754 and FR59542051180: VIES returned the Irish and French numbers as valid on 26 Sept 2026 (Google Ireland Limited, TotalEnergies SE); DE260656754 is DB Fernverkehr AG's VAT ID as printed in the bahn.de imprint. GB220430231 shows the HMRC route and PL774000145400000, a Polish EORI, shows the VAT suggestion. — VIES test of 26 Sept 2026; bahn.de/impressum.
AT + 8 digits — Austrian numbers include the "U": ATU + 8 digits. Suggestion: the same number with U. — VIES FAQ question 19.
GR + 9 digits — Greek VAT numbers start with EL; GR is the Greek EORI prefix. VIES rejects GR as an input error. — VIES structure table; VIES test of 26 Sept 2026.
DE + 10 to 13 digits — That looks like the German tax number (Steuernummer). The VAT ID is a separate number from the BZSt: DE + 9 digits. — BZSt; § 27a UStG.
PL + 10 digits + 00000 — That is what a Polish EORI looks like. The VAT number (VAT UE) is PL + NIP, without the five zeros. Suggestion: PL + the first 10 digits. — Art. 97(10) Polish VAT Act; EOS and VIES test of 26 Sept 2026.
FR + 9 digits — That is the SIREN (or a SIREN-based French EORI). The VAT number puts a 2-character key before the SIREN — it is on your customer's invoices. — service-public.fr ("code FR, clé informatique (2 chiffres), numéro Siren").
FR + 14 digits — That is a SIRET (SIREN + establishment number). The VAT number uses the SIREN with the key in front. — service-public.fr.
IT + 15 or 16 characters with letters — That is an individual's codice fiscale or the EORI derived from it. The partita IVA has 11 digits. — VIES structure table (IT = 11 digits).
NL + 9 digits — The "B" and the 2-digit sub-number are missing: NL + 9 digits + B + 2 digits, e.g. NL123456789B01. — Belastingdienst, btw-identificatienummer.
ES + 9 digits — Spanish NIF-IVA numbers carry a letter at the start or the end; first and last may not both be digits. — VIES structure table, note 4.
CH… — Switzerland is not in VIES. Whether a Swiss business is in the VAT (MWST) register is shown in the UID register of the Federal Statistical Office. — uid.admin.ch.
TR… — Türkiye is not in VIES. Turkish businesses have a tax identification number (VKN); an EU VAT number only after registering for VAT in an EU member state. — BZSt FAQ (businesses established abroad).
NO… — Norway is not an EU member state and is not in VIES.
other prefix — Not a VIES state — VIES covers only the EU-27 and XI.
digits only — Add the country prefix in front, for example DE, IE or FR.
special characters or too long — Letters, digits and, for NL and IE, "+" or "*" are allowed; more than 14 characters after the prefix cannot be a VAT number.
other mismatch — Does not match the structure table but was still sent: the VIES answer decides.
Why a name is often missing — VIES returns the name and address only when the issuing member state releases them. When they are missing the number can still be valid; Germany and Spain released no names in our test. The UK's HMRC service does show the name and address for GB numbers.
What a "valid" answer proves — The record shows what VIES answered and when. Proof towards a tax authority is the consultation number VIES issues when you check with your own VAT number.
Valid at the time of the request in the issuing member state.
Who stands behind the number is only shown by the name and address, where released.
The Commission states that a confirmed VAT number is only one element of evidence for a VAT-exempt intra-EU supply.
Where the number goes next in Logistivo — The verified number belongs on the customer's company card in Logistivo's company directory, where the tax number, tax office and EU VAT number are separate fields. The invoicing module takes the recipient's VAT number from the card onto the PDF invoice and into the e-invoice (UBL BIS 3.0, Factur-X or XRechnung), and export documents such as the proforma, commercial invoice and packing list print each party's VAT number and EORI on separate lines.
Store the verified VAT number once — right on every invoice — Save it on your customer's company card in Logistivo: invoices, e-invoices and the export documents of your loads take it from there instead of retyping it each time.
Accounting & e-invoicing — Recipient VAT number on the PDF invoice and in the e-invoice (UBL BIS 3.0, Factur-X, XRechnung). — /en/accounting-invoicing
Load management — Export documents per load with each party's VAT number and EORI on separate lines. — /en/load-management
The numbers, your own VAT number and the names VIES returns are not stored in a database or in log files; a simple check stays in a cache for at most 10 minutes. Each check starts only when you click.
Not tax advice. The record shows the VIES answer at the time stated; whether a supply is VAT-exempt depends on further conditions. Law and tests as of 26 Sept 2026.
Simple check, consultation number or HMRC reference: what does each prove?
Simple check, consultation number or HMRC reference: what does each prove? — Four levels, from structure to a reference you can file. This checker covers the first three for EU and XI numbers; the fourth is HMRC's own service for GB numbers.
Structure check — Does the number match the prefix and digit pattern of the issuing state?
Structure check — Typos, a missing "U" for AT, GR instead of EL, a tax number instead of a VAT number.
Structure check — That the number exists or is valid — the Commission publishes no check digits.
Structure check — The "Structure" column in the record.
Simple check (VIES) — The issuing member state confirms in real time whether the number is valid now; name and address only where it releases them.
Simple check (VIES) — Validity at the time of the request.
Simple check (VIES) — No name for German and Spanish numbers; nothing about earlier dates.
Simple check (VIES) — European Commission VIES — https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/#/vat-validation
Simple check (VIES) — The "VIES result" column.
Check with your own VAT number — You check as a business with your own EU or XI VAT number; VIES replies with a unique consultation number.
Check with your own VAT number — That you checked a given number at a given time and received a given answer.
Check with your own VAT number — A name match; the Commission calls it only one element of evidence for the exemption.
Check with your own VAT number — VIES (requester details) — https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/#/vat-validation
Check with your own VAT number — The "Your own EU/XI VAT number" field and the "Consultation number" column.
HMRC check with reference number — HMRC's "Check a UK VAT number" confirms a GB number and shows the business name and address.
HMRC check with reference number — With your own UK VAT number, HMRC gives a reference number to prove when you checked.
HMRC check with reference number — Only GB numbers; the proof option is for UK VAT-registered businesses.
HMRC check with reference number — GOV.UK — Check a UK VAT number — https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-vat-number
HMRC check with reference number — GB lines link straight to the HMRC service.
After the check: one number, used everywhere — In Logistivo the VAT number is its own field on the company card, separate from the tax number and the EORI. Invoices, e-invoices and export documents read it from there, so every document carries the number you verified. File the consultation number or HMRC reference with your accounting records.

How do I check an EU VAT number?
Enter it in VIES, the European Commission's VAT number checker: VIES asks the tax database of the member state that issued the number and answers valid or invalid in real time. It is free, and it is the source this page queries.
The checker above sends up to 10 numbers at once, each as its own request, because VIES itself only accepts single requests. There is no EU-wide register of businesses behind VIES, and it cannot search by company name: the number has to come from your customer or supplier.
For proof, what matters is who asks. Checked with your own EU or XI VAT number as requester, VIES returns a consultation number that shows a tax authority you checked a given number at a given time and received a given reply.
Why does VIES show no name for a valid VAT number?
Because the issuing member state does not release it. VIES shows the name and address only where the member state permits it; otherwise the reply shows "---" and the number can still be valid.
In our test on 26 Sept 2026 German and Spanish numbers came back without names, while Irish, Italian, French, Polish, Belgian and Romanian numbers came with name and address. The Dutch tax authority notes that a German customer's name and address cannot be checked in VIES and that a valid number is sufficient evidence you are dealing with a business.
Businesses have the right to ask their own tax administration whether a VAT number is associated with a given name and address (VIES FAQ 15). In Germany that is the BZSt's qualified confirmation; in the UK the HMRC service shows the name for GB numbers.
How do I check a UK VAT number after Brexit?
Use HMRC's free "Check a UK VAT number" service: since 1 January 2021 VIES no longer validates GB numbers. Northern Ireland numbers starting with XI are still checked in VIES.
HMRC confirms whether a UK VAT registration number is valid and shows the name and address it is registered to. A UK VAT number is 9 digits, sometimes written with GB in front; branch traders use 12 digits and government departments and health authorities use GD or HA plus 3 digits.
If you are a UK VAT-registered business, enter your own VAT number in the HMRC service to get a reference number proving when you checked. For XI numbers, the checker above asks VIES like any EU number.
Is a VAT number the same as an EORI number?
No. The VAT number identifies a business for VAT and is checked in VIES; the EORI identifies it to customs and is checked in the Commission's EORI system (EOS) or, for GB, at HMRC. In some countries the characters are identical, in others they are not.
Italy — VAT number (VIES): IT + partita IVA (11 digits) · EORI (EOS): IT + partita IVA; individuals: IT + 15 characters of the codice fiscale · Test of 26 Sept 2026: IT00159560366 valid in VIES and EOS — same string, two registers
Poland — VAT number (VIES): PL + NIP (10 digits) · EORI (EOS): PL + NIP + 00000 · Test of 26 Sept 2026: PL7740001454 valid in VIES, not valid in EOS; PL774000145400000 valid in EOS
France — VAT number (VIES): FR + 2-character key + SIREN · EORI (EOS): FR + SIREN · Test of 26 Sept 2026: FR542051180 (SIREN only) valid in EOS, invalid in VIES
Greece — VAT number (VIES): EL + 9 digits · EORI (EOS): GR + number · Test of 26 Sept 2026: VIES rejects GR in front of a VAT number as an input error
United Kingdom — VAT number (VIES): GB + 9 digits (HMRC) · EORI (EOS): GB + 12–15 digits (HMRC) · Test of 26 Sept 2026: Neither is in VIES
Kept apart in Logistivo — On the proforma, commercial invoice, packing list, shipping instruction and delivery note produced in Logistivo, each party's "VAT No" and "EORI" print on their own lines; when AI reads a document in, it fills the party from the matching company card.
Not in VIES. The Commission has no database of VAT-registered businesses to search by name; VIES only confirms a number you already have (VIES FAQ 17 and 20).
Ask your customer or supplier for the number — it appears on their invoices, and many businesses print it on their website. In the UK, HMRC's service also needs the number and cannot search by name.
When do I need my customer's VAT number?
For every VAT-exempt intra-EU supply of goods: the customer must be identified for VAT in another member state and must have given you that VAT number (Article 138(1)(b) of the VAT Directive, as amended by Directive (EU) 2018/1910).
Recapitulative statement: the exemption does not apply if you did not file the statement, or it shows incorrect details for the supply, unless you can duly justify it (Article 138(1a)).
Invoice: the customer's VAT number must be on the invoice for an intra-EU supply and wherever the customer pays the VAT (Article 226, point 4).
Business-to-business services: a supplier may regard an EU customer as a taxable person once the customer has communicated its VAT number and the supplier has confirmed the number with its name and address (Article 18(1)(a) of Implementing Regulation 282/2011).
Customers outside the EU: a certificate from their tax authority, or their VAT or equivalent business number plus reasonable checks, can serve (Article 18(3)).
Where the number lands in Logistivo — The invoicing module takes the VAT number from the recipient's company card onto the PDF invoice and into the e-invoice (UBL BIS 3.0, Factur-X or XRechnung). The module is optional and switched on in settings.
Lower-case letters and spaces — VIES is case-sensitive: "IE6388047v" came back invalid. The checker upper-cases and removes spaces and dots.
Checking a GB number in VIES — VIES stopped validating GB numbers on 1 January 2021. Use HMRC's service; XI numbers stay in VIES.
GR instead of EL, AT without U — Greece is EL, Austria is ATU + 8 digits. The checker suggests both.
An EORI instead of a VAT number — PL774000145400000 is an EORI; the same company's Polish VAT number is PL7740001454.
Reading "unavailable" as "invalid" — When a member state's service is down, that says nothing about the number. Check again later.
Checking once and never again — VIES confirms only the moment of the request. Check close to the supply and keep the consultation number.
What Logistivo does with the verified number
What Logistivo does with the verified number — The check takes a second — you need the number on every invoice and export document after it.
Separate fields on the company card — Tax number, tax office and EU VAT number are separate fields in Logistivo's company directory — for customers, suppliers and partners.
Paste a company list instead of retyping — Paste spreadsheet rows, email signatures or a list: AI picks out the companies with their VAT numbers, and Logistivo flags duplicates by tax number, VAT number or name before you save.
Invoice and e-invoice — The invoicing module puts the recipient's VAT number on the PDF invoice and in the e-invoice (UBL BIS 3.0, Factur-X, XRechnung).
Export documents per load — Proforma, commercial invoice, packing list, shipping instruction and delivery note show each party's VAT number and EORI on separate lines.
Check, store, invoice correctly — with Logistivo
Add customers and partners with their verified VAT numbers to Logistivo; the invoices, e-invoices and export documents of your loads take the number from the company card.

Frequently asked questions
Is the VAT number check free?
Yes. VIES and HMRC's service are free, and so is this checker — no sign-up needed.
How many numbers can I check at once?
Up to 10 per check. Each goes to VIES as its own request, because VIES only accepts single requests.
How do I get a consultation number?
Enter your own EU or XI VAT number in the requester field. VIES then checks with you as requester and returns a unique consultation number for each check; it appears in the record and on the printout.
What happens to the numbers I check here?
They go to VIES for the check only. The numbers, your own VAT number and the names returned are not stored in a database or in log files; a simple check stays in a cache for at most 10 minutes.
Why does the record say "unavailable"?
The member state's service did not answer or was busy. It is not a verdict on the number: check again later.
Can I check Northern Ireland XI numbers?
Yes. XI numbers are validated in VIES for trade in goods under the Northern Ireland arrangements; GB numbers are checked at HMRC.
Can Logistivo keep my customers' VAT numbers?
Yes. Every company card in Logistivo's company directory has separate fields for tax number, tax office and VAT number, and when you paste a company list Logistivo flags duplicates by tax number, VAT number or name.
Does the customer's VAT number appear on invoices from Logistivo?
Yes, once the invoicing module is switched on: the number from the recipient's company card appears on the PDF invoice and in the e-invoice (UBL BIS 3.0, Factur-X or XRechnung).
