Tachograph symbols and meanings: look up any pictogram instantly
Digital tachograph symbols are the pictograms of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/799, Annex I C, Appendix 3: the steering wheel means driving, crossed hammers other work, the square with a diagonal availability and the bed break or rest; “!” marks an event, “x” a fault, “?” an unknown period or a question, OUT means out of scope and the ship a ferry or train crossing. Type or tap what you see and this tool shows the official name, what to do and the rule behind it. In Logistivo the tachograph calibration certificate sits on the truck with its validity date, next to each driver’s documents.

Record the right activity — Driving is recorded automatically while the vehicle moves; when it stands, the driver selects other work (crossed hammers), availability (square with a diagonal) or break/rest (bed). Regulation 165/2014 art. 34(5)(b) requires the four to be recorded separately. The tachograph warns 15 minutes before and when continuous driving exceeds the maximum of 4 h 30. To check a whole week against the limits, use the drivers’ hours calculator. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(5)(b); Annex I C req. 184; Reg. (EC) 561/2006 art. 7
Fill the gap with a manual entry — “?” marks time with no card in the tachograph and no manual entry. At the next card insertion the tachograph offers the manual entry procedure: add other work, availability or break/rest for the time away from the vehicle (art. 34(3)). Only those three activities can be added, only between the last withdrawal and this insertion, and they cannot overlap. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(3); Annex I C req. 61
Put each card in the right slot — Slot 1 is the driver’s slot, slot 2 the co-driver’s. With two drivers, each must insert the card into the correct slot (art. 34(4)); whoever drives goes in slot 1. Two steering wheels (crew driving) are printed next to activities recorded in crew mode. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(4); Annex I C, Appendix 4, blocks 8.3 and 10.3
Read the qualifier as a period — Qualifiers change the meaning of the pictogram next to them: 24h = daily, one bar = weekly, two bars = two weeks, Σ = total/summary, the arrow = from/to. Steering wheel + one bar is the driving time of the week and steering wheel + two bars the driving time of two weeks — the figures to compare with 56 hours a week and 90 hours in two consecutive weeks. — Annex I C, Appendix 3; Reg. (EC) 561/2006 art. 6(2)–(3)
The mode follows the card inserted — The people pictograms also stand for the four modes: operational mode with a driver card or no card, company mode with a company card, control mode with a control card, calibration mode with a workshop card. The driver’s daily work is recorded in operational mode; company mode lets the company lock and download its own data. — Annex I C, 2.3 (req. 9–10) and 3.7
Roadside check: what the officer sees — The controller pictogram marks a control card, the control place and control records. In a roadside check the driver must be able to show the driver card plus all manual records and printouts of the current day and the previous 56 days (art. 36(2)). The last control is printed in block 7 of the daily printout; speed + controller records that an officer displayed or printed the over speeding data. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 36(2); Annex I C req. 70; Appendix 4, block 7
Keep the calibration inside its two-year window — The workshop hammer marks a workshop card, calibration mode and the technical data printout. An approved workshop must inspect the tachograph at least every two years (art. 23(1)); the inspection checks, among other things, the installation plaque, the seals and the tyre size and circumference (art. 23(2)). The last calibration appears in block 6 of every daily printout. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 23(1)–(2); Appendix 4, blocks 6 and 17
Use the driver card every day you drive — Steering wheel + card is the driver card, building + card the company card. Drivers must use the driver card every day they drive, from the moment they take over the vehicle, and must not withdraw it before the end of the daily working period unless authorised or to enter the country after a border crossing (art. 34(1)). — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(1)
No card or a broken card: printouts at start and end — Driving without a valid driver card records the event “driving without an appropriate card”. If the card is damaged, malfunctions, is lost or stolen, apply for a replacement within 7 calendar days; you may drive without it for up to 15 calendar days, or longer if needed to bring the vehicle back to its base (art. 29(4)–(5)). Meanwhile print the vehicle data at the start and at the end of the journey, write your name and card or licence number on the printout, add other work, availability and rest by hand and sign (art. 35(2)). — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 29(4)–(5) and 35(2); Annex I C req. 75
Enter the country at start and end of the day — Start (bar + triangle) and end (triangle + bar) with the location pictogram are the places where the daily working period began and ended. The driver enters the country symbol at both (art. 34(7)); a smart tachograph proposes the place from satellite positioning and the driver confirms or corrects it. The end place entered at card withdrawal stays temporary until the next insertion confirms it. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(7); Annex I C req. 56–60
After a border: the country at the first stop — The flag is the digital map/border crossing pictogram; flag + satellite is the position where the vehicle crossed a border. Since 2 February 2022 the driver enters the symbol of the country entered, at the first stop at the nearest possible stopping place at or after the border; after a ferry or train, at the port or station of arrival. This is not needed where the tachograph records the location automatically (art. 8), as the version-2 smart tachograph does. These records also back up posting declarations and cabotage counts. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 8(1) and 34(7); Appendix 4, block 11.5a
Positions: automatic, every three hours of driving — The satellite pictogram is the GNSS facility. A smart tachograph records the position at the start and end of the daily work period and every three hours of accumulated driving; the version-2 unit also at each border crossing and load/unload operation (art. 8(1)). “!” + satellite is recorded when there is no position for more than three hours of accumulated driving or the external GNSS link is down for more than 20 minutes while moving; “!” + satellite + “?” is a GNSS anomaly; “!” + antenna means the remote communication facility did not acknowledge data after three attempts. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 8(1); Annex I C req. 80–82, 88a
Enter load and unload before leaving the place — The arrows are load (up), unload (down) and simultaneous load/unload; with the satellite they mark the recorded position. The version-2 smart tachograph lets the driver enter each operation in real time, and the entry has to be made before the vehicle leaves the place of the operation. The load type — goods, passengers or undefined — is recorded at card insertion. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 8(1); Annex I C req. 62a–62c; Appendix 4, blocks 8b and 11.5b
OUT only when the journey is outside the rules — OUT means “out of scope”: the tachograph is not required under Regulation 561/2006 — for example a journey covered by an exemption of art. 3 or a national derogation of art. 13. The driver opens and closes OUT in real time (OUT + arrow = begin, arrow + OUT = end); inserting or withdrawing a driver card closes it automatically. While OUT is open, the event “driving without an appropriate card” and the continuous-driving warnings are suppressed, and the OUT entries are printed (blocks 8a and 8.3a) — so OUT on a journey that falls within the rules is visible in a check. — Annex I C definition (gg) and req. 62; Reg. (EC) 561/2006 art. 3 and 13
Ferry or train: rest first, then the ferry/train flag — On board, select BREAK/REST first and enter the ferry/train begin flag immediately after; end it on arrival, before driving off (the tachograph also closes it at card withdrawal, when OUT is opened or when driving is detected). Under Regulation 561/2006 art. 9(1), a regular daily rest or reduced weekly rest on a ferry or train may be interrupted at most twice by other activities totalling no more than one hour, with access to a sleeper cabin, bunk or couchette; a regular weekly rest only qualifies if the journey is scheduled for 8 hours or more and there is a sleeper cabin. — Annex I C req. 62; Reg. (EC) 561/2006 art. 9(1); Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(5)(b)(v)
Manual entries: only at card insertion — M marks manual entry of driver activities; the combinations ending in “?” are the questions of the manual entry procedure — still the same daily work period, end of the previous work period, confirm or enter the end place, enter the start time, enter the start place. The procedure is only offered at card insertion; only other work, availability or break/rest can be entered, for the time since the last withdrawal, without overlaps, and entries can be changed until you validate them. If you enter no place, the tachograph treats the work period as unchanged since the last withdrawal. — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 34(3); Annex I C req. 59 and 61
Print, display or download the record — The printer (▼) marks a printout: 24h + card + printer is the daily printout of the driver card, 24h + vehicle + printer the daily printout of the vehicle unit, and with “!” and “x” the events and faults printouts. The card printouts need a driver or workshop card in the tachograph. The display can show the same content line by line; external storage marks downloading. A printout is also where the driver writes the reason for an exceptional departure from the driving rules. — Annex I C req. 167–170; Appendix 4; Reg. (EC) 561/2006 art. 12
Over speeding: more than 60 seconds above the limiter setting — The speed pictogram (>) marks speed; two of them mark over speeding, which the regulation defines as exceeding the speed limiter setting for more than 60 seconds. The over speeding printout lists the first over speeding after the last calibration, the five most serious of the last 365 days and the most serious of each of the last 10 days with an occurrence. — Annex I C definition (hh) and req. 78; Appendix 4, PRT_013
“!” is an event: note it and keep the printout — “!” marks an event: the tachograph recorded an incident involving a card, the time, the power supply, the motion sensor, security or positioning. Events are stored on the card and in the vehicle unit and appear in the events and faults printouts and among the last five events on every daily printout (blocks 12.4 and 13.4). The pictograms after “!” say what the event concerns. — Annex I C, 3.9 (req. 71–88a); Appendix 4, blocks 12–13
Card events: check the card and the slot — “!” + card: a non-valid card was inserted — expired, already replaced or invalid. “!” + card + card: card conflict, an invalid combination of cards in the two slots. “!” + card + steering wheel: a card was inserted while driving. “!” + card + lock: the last card session was not closed correctly — the card was withdrawn before all data were stored. — Annex I C req. 72, 73, 76, 77
Clock: UTC inside, local time on screen — The clock is the time pictogram; clock + arrow = from/to time. “!” + two clocks is time overlap: the card’s last withdrawal is later than this tachograph’s current time — typical after driving a vehicle whose clock is wrong. “!” + clock is a time conflict or a time adjustment by a workshop: the tachograph’s time differs from the authenticated satellite time by more than the tolerance. The printout time in block 1 is UTC. — Annex I C req. 74 and 86; Appendix 4, block 1
Power, sensor and security events: have the unit checked — “!” + power: supply interruption of more than 200 milliseconds outside calibration or control mode (starting the engine does not count). “!” + sensor: motion data error between sensor and vehicle unit. “!” + vehicle + sensor: vehicle motion conflict — the sensor contradicts satellite positioning or another independent source. “!” + lock: security breach attempt. A lock alone stands for security, authenticated data and seals. Inspectors read these events when they suspect manipulation; if they come from a defect, the company must have the tachograph repaired by an approved workshop. — Annex I C req. 79, 83–85; Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 37(1)
“x” is a fault: repair it and note what was not recorded — “x” marks a fault of a card or of the equipment: card fault in slot 1 or 2, display, downloading, printer, sensor, vehicle unit, GNSS or remote detection. The company must have the tachograph repaired by an approved workshop as soon as circumstances permit — en route if the vehicle cannot return to base within one week (art. 37(1)). Until then the driver writes name and card or licence number, signs and records the periods no longer recorded or printed correctly, on a temporary sheet kept with the driver card (art. 37(2)). — Reg. (EU) 165/2014 art. 37; Annex I C req. 87–88
Equipment signs appear in menus and records — Vehicle (the vehicle unit), sensor, power supply, remote detection facility and ITS interface are the components of the tachograph system. On their own they appear in menus and printouts — for example vehicle identification (block 4) and sensor pairing on the technical data printout; combined with “!” or “x” they report an event or a fault of that component. — Annex I C, Appendix 3; Appendix 4, blocks 4, 5, 15 and 16
All tachograph symbols: the official list of 106 pictograms — Every pictogram and combination of Appendix 3, grouped by what it tells you. Tap a row to open its meaning in place; the search and the chips only highlight — nothing is hidden.

The pictograms are redrawn from the regulation’s dot-matrix shapes; your display may draw them slightly differently. The rules summarised here are the EU texts linked below — national enforcement practice and penalties are set by each country.
How do you read the 24-hour tachograph printout? — The daily printout from the driver card (24h + card + printer) is built from numbered blocks defined in Appendix 4, PRT_008. Tap a number on the paper to highlight its line. The lines show the format the regulation prescribes — dd/mm/yyyy, hh:mm for a start time, hhhmm for a duration — not a real driver’s data.

Blocks 8b, 11.5a and 11.5b (load type, border crossings, load/unload) come from the version-2 smart tachograph.
What do the tachograph symbols mean?
They are the official pictograms of Implementing Regulation (EU) 2016/799, Annex I C, Appendix 3: four activity signs (steering wheel = driving, crossed hammers = other work, square with a diagonal = availability, bed = break or rest), people and card signs, place signs, and building blocks that combine: “!” = event, “x” = fault, “?” = unknown or a question, printer = printout, 24h = daily.
A combination reads left to right: “!” + card + steering wheel is “card insertion while driving”, 24h + card + printer is the daily printout from the card. Manufacturers may draw the pictograms slightly differently as long as they stay unambiguously identifiable (PIC_001), so displays from different makers differ in detail.
The list on this page follows the consolidated text of 21 August 2023, which added the smart tachograph version 2 signs for border crossings, load/unload operations and load type (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/1228).
What does OUT mean on a tachograph, and when can I use it?
OUT means “out of scope”: the journey does not need the tachograph under Regulation 561/2006, for example because an exemption of art. 3 or a national derogation of art. 13 applies.
The driver switches OUT on and off in real time; OUT + arrow marks the begin, arrow + OUT the end, and inserting or withdrawing a driver card closes it automatically. While OUT is open the tachograph suppresses the “driving without an appropriate card” event and the continuous-driving warnings, and the printout shows the OUT entries (blocks 8a and 8.3a).
Use OUT only for journeys the rules do not cover.
Close it when the in-scope work starts again — or re-insert the card, which closes it.
Time spent driving a vehicle used for commercial operations outside the scope is recorded as other work (Regulation 561/2006 art. 6(5)).
How do you record a ferry or train crossing on the tachograph?
Select BREAK/REST first, then enter the ferry/train begin flag straight away; end it on arrival, before driving off the ferry or train.
Regulation 561/2006 art. 9(1) lets a regular daily rest or reduced weekly rest on a ferry or train be interrupted at most twice by other activities, no more than one hour in total, if the driver has a sleeper cabin, bunk or couchette. A regular weekly rest qualifies only if the crossing is scheduled for 8 hours or more and there is a sleeper cabin. After a border crossed on a ferry or train, the country symbol is entered at the port or station of arrival.
What is the difference between “!”, “x” and “?” on the tachograph?
“!” is an event (the tachograph recorded an incident: a card, time, power, motion, security or positioning problem), “x” is a fault of a card or of the equipment, and “?” is either an unknown period on the printout or a question in the manual entry procedure.
“!” + card + steering wheel: card inserted while driving.
“!” + two clocks: time overlap — the card’s last withdrawal is later than this tachograph’s clock.
“x” + printer: printer fault; “x” + card + 1: card fault in the driver slot.
“?” on the printout: time without a card and without a manual entry.
Which country symbols does the driver have to enter?
The country where the daily working period starts and where it ends, and — since 2 February 2022 — the country entered after a Member State border, at the first stop at the nearest possible stopping place at or after the border (art. 34(7)).
After a ferry or train crossing the country is entered at the port or station of arrival. Where the tachograph records the location automatically, as the version-2 smart tachograph does at each border crossing, the manual entry is not needed. The same crossings feed the rules on posting of drivers and cabotage.
Days abroad in Logistivo — The Logistivo driver app sends the truck’s position with the load, and the carrier panel counts each driver’s days in the Schengen area for the 90/180 rule — the same count as our 90/180 calculator, kept up to date from the app.
What does the driver do if the card or the tachograph breaks down?
With a damaged, faulty, lost or stolen driver card: apply for a replacement within 7 calendar days, drive without it for at most 15 calendar days, and make a printout at the start and at the end of each journey with name, card or licence number, handwritten activities and signature (art. 29 and 35).
With a faulty tachograph the company has it repaired by an approved workshop as soon as circumstances permit — en route if the vehicle cannot return to base within one week — and the driver records by hand the periods the tachograph no longer records or prints correctly (art. 37).
Calibration and documents in Logistivo — Logistivo keeps the truck’s tachograph calibration certificate and each driver’s licence, passport, visa and professional certificates with their validity dates, and emails the ones that have expired or are about to every two weeks — so a two-year inspection is not discovered at the roadside.
How long must tachograph printouts be kept?
On board: the driver card plus all manual records and printouts of the current day and the previous 56 days (art. 36(2)). In the company: data downloaded from the vehicle unit and the driver card are kept for at least 12 months (Regulation 561/2006 art. 10(5)).
In Great Britain the roadside period is 28 days for AETR or domestic journeys and 56 days for international journeys to and from the EU (GOV.UK).
Common tachograph symbol mistakes
OUT left open on normal work — OUT suppresses the “driving without an appropriate card” event and the continuous-driving warnings — and the printout shows every OUT entry (blocks 8a and 8.3a).
Ferry flag before rest — Select BREAK/REST first, then the ferry/train flag; forgetting to close it on arrival mixes the crossing with the next driving.
No country after the border — Since 2 February 2022 the country is entered at the first stop at or after the border, unless the tachograph records it automatically.
Trying to add driving by hand — Manual entries only accept other work, availability or break/rest — driving is recorded by the tachograph alone.
Reading the printout in local time — Block 1 and the activity times are UTC; the display may show local time.
Throwing old printouts away — Printouts and manual records of the current day and the previous 56 days must be on board.
What Logistivo adds around the tachograph
What Logistivo adds around the tachograph — The tachograph records the driver’s time; Logistivo keeps the paperwork and the trip around it in one place.
Calibration on the truck — Upload the tachograph calibration certificate to the vehicle: Logistivo reads the validity date and includes it in the two-weekly expiry email with inspection, insurance and ADR certificates.
Driver app with one secure link — Drivers join with a single secure link, share the position with the assigned load and see only their own loads — not your customers or prices.
Stops and days abroad — Each pickup, customs and delivery stop is marked done with its time; each driver’s Schengen 90/180 days are counted from the app’s daily position.
Driver documents with dates — Passport, visa, residence permit, driving licence, travel health insurance and professional certificates, each with its own expiry, in the same email.
Keep drivers, trucks and their paperwork in one place
Logistivo’s carrier panel keeps each truck’s tachograph calibration and each driver’s documents with their validity dates, and the driver app sends position and stop updates with the load.

Break or rest. Under Regulation 165/2014 art. 34(5)(b) the bed covers breaks, rest, annual leave and sick leave.
What do the crossed hammers mean?
Other work: any work other than driving, such as loading, checks, paperwork or work for another employer.
What does the square with a diagonal line mean?
Availability: time the driver is available but neither driving nor working, with a foreseeable duration.
What does “?” mean on a tachograph printout?
An unknown period: time with no card in the tachograph and no manual entry. At card insertion, the “?” pictograms are also the questions of the manual entry procedure.
Is the time on the printout local time?
No. The printing time in block 1 and the activity times are UTC.
How often must a tachograph be calibrated?
An approved workshop must inspect it at least every two years (Regulation 165/2014 art. 23(1)); the last calibration is printed in block 6 of the daily printout.
What does the ship symbol mean?
A ferry or train crossing. Select break/rest first and then the ferry/train flag; close it on arrival.
How does Logistivo help with the tachograph?
Logistivo keeps the tachograph calibration certificate on the truck and each driver’s documents with their validity dates, emails what expires every two weeks, and its driver app sends the truck’s position and stop updates with the load.
Does Logistivo count drivers’ days abroad?
Yes. The Logistivo carrier panel counts each driver’s days in the Schengen area for the 90/180 rule from the driver app’s daily position.
